Wedding Guest Attire: What to Wear to a Wedding (Part 3)

Wedding Guest Attire: What to Wear to a Wedding (Part 3)

After planning ahead and decoding the formality or probably the theme of the event, putting together the perfect wedding guest outfit also requires smart decision to make sure you’re dressed appropriate for the wedding’s look and feel while still looking classy and weather or season appropriate. Unlike seasons, temperatures are iffy to gauge, but even harder so is windiness and sun exposure. So think about where the wedding is set, what season and how the temperature is

All weddings can be very beautiful whether they are held in spring, summer, fall, or winter, or even under sun exposure or during windy days, inside or outdoors. Just make sure you understand what best to wear for those occasions. Follow these fashion tips to help choose the perfect outfit to wear.

Following the last article Wedding Guest Attire: What to Wear to a Wedding (Part 2) and (Part 1). Here are some ideas and a few things to bear in mind:

Windy or Hot Outdoor Location

Outdoor Guest DressesFor an outdoor location – whether it’s a beach or garden party – avoid high heeled shoes that will sink in the sand or in the grass. Loose fitting clothing made of natural fibers will be your friend to strike the right balance between comfort, formality, and stylishness. A wedge heel will be far more comfortable, or, you can go for the very trendy ballerina shoes or flats.

Outdoor Wedding Guest OutfitIf the ceremony is outside in a blustery locale, be sure you wear a longer or tighter fitting skirt (without pleats or gust catching layers). Wear wrap but avoid anything that will get caught in the wind – you won’t want a battle of wills between the wind and your modesty. If it’s in a hot location avoid the suit and go for a breezy dress to help you keep your cool. Don’t forget pack sunscreen if needed so you’re not a lobster after the ceremony.

Outdoor Wedding Guest Outfit IdeaAdding a wide brim hat to your outfit will not only shield your face, but it will enhance some European classy punch to your ensemble. Also don’t forget to have sunglasses for an eye protection. Moreover, if you’re traveling to another city, make sure you pack a cardigan or jacket that coordinates with the outfit you plan to wear to the wedding. Notice that even on a warmer day, a light sweater will keep the sun off of your shoulders, preventing sun damage. And if it’s indoors at the country club or fancy restaurant, make your outfit slightly more tailored and dressy.

The Season of the Wedding
Just like many other seasonal fashion trends, finding the perfect wedding guest outfits also follows the same rule regarding to each season, for example, colorful and bright outfits for spring and summer, or warm and cozy ones for fall and winter. Choose prints and colors according to the season such as garden flower prints in pastel and bright shades for spring and summer, or autumnal prints in earthy or jewel tones for fall and winter.

Moreover, you also have to opt for a dress that simultaneously fits the dress code. For spring and summer weddings, nothing works better than pretty colorful floral prints for outdoorsy receptions and garden drinks. You also need to wear something light and breezy to help you keep your cool. For fall and winter weddings, not only you have to look stylish and elegant, but you also need to stay warm. So wear outerwear or tights, or choose outfits made of warm fabrics. Think jewel tones, brocades, moody floral prints, and rich textures for a seasonally appropriate and festive look. Here are some suggestions of wedding guest attires best for each season.

If someone could help me out, that would be GREATLY appreciated! I was invited as a guest to a wedding that’s taking place this weekend. My date has been absolutely no help with figuring out the proper attire (typical guy). The wedding is taking place at a country club (we live in Florida) at 5 PM, with dinner and reception following. That would lead me to think that the attire is more on the formal side… However, my date has repeatedly mentioned that it’s a small wedding, it’s not a “big deal” (possibly his way of saying casual), and he himself (he’s a groomsman) will only be wearing suit pants, shirt, and a vest (no jacket). I’m completely panicking about finding something appropriate, especially as I only have a few days left. PLEASE HELP! Thank you!

Hi Victoria, sorry for the late reply

I think you could opt for a semi-formal dress such as sheath or cocktail dress.
Pick a dress in soft or light colors, such as pastel, neutral colors, or feminine prints.
Avoid sparkling embellishments, heavy prints, and also choose dainty jewelry.
Basically, just dress in the most subtle way.

You may check “Real Weddings” website (especially this wedding) for ideas of guest dress – which I think might similar to the wedding you are going to attend.

I hope you can find some inspirations among the pictures shown
Thank you so much for your comment Victoria
And wish you for a wonderful day 🙂

Hello! I too am going to a wedding the 20th of March. I want to wear this Allison Parris dress that’s a light blue with white circles. The wedding will be at a ranch at 5 and reception will follow. Would a light blue dress work? Or should I go darker? The dress is called float on dress if anyone wants to google it.

    1. dee-nee says:

      Hi Briah,

Well, although I agree that the dress would look more perfect for afternoon wedding, I think it still works for the evening one.
You can pair the dress with darker accessories including shoes, clutch, and jewelries along with makeup for evening wedding.

I hope my suggestion would be helpful,
Thank you so much for your question Briah

I could use some help in deciding if I should wear hose or not. Wedding is at 6:30,outside, with a semi formal reception inside afterwards I am planning on wearing a navy knee length dress with a navy lace over cream bodice and chiffon flowy skirt. My shoes are dressy navy short heal with a peep toe. I am 61 years old.

    1. dee-nee says:

      Hi Linda,

It depends on your need and comfort. For me, not only that fashion is about looking good, but also about comfort.
Reading all notes you mentioned – semi formal, indoor reception, stylish chiffon flowy skirt, and a dressy peep-toe heel – In my opinion it’s not necessary for you to wear stockings (or hose) especially if the weather is warm.

But If you are not going to be comfortable not wearing hose, or if there is a need, than I would suggest a nude pair.

I hope it can help Linda
Wish you a wonderful day 🙂
